Biology of the narcissus
2
Poet's narcissus and radiant-flowered narcissus are the two narcissi found in the Riviera, Intyamon and Pays-d'Enhaut regions. From Rougemont onwards and in Saanenland, yellow daffodils, belonging to the same genus as narcissi (Narcissus), take pride of place.
Narcissus generally thrives in cool, moist, nutrient-rich soil. Its growing season begins in March, when the first leaves appear, sometimes even through the snow.
Flowering takes place between May and July, depending on altitude. During the vegetation period, the leaves must not be damaged, as they produce nutrients and transmit some of them to the bulb for the following year. The bulb is then able to divide and give birth to a new fragile bud inside the bulb. This is the narcissus' main form of reproduction, vegetative reproduction.
Following fertilisation of the flower by a pollinator, the narcissus can also reproduce sexually by producing seeds. This second method of reproduction allows the plant to maintain genetic diversity while dispersing over greater distances.
